TAKING THESE PRODUCTS
First of all, I want to make it clear that I am not a doctor, I don't even play one on T.V. ... however, I have attended a lot of seminars, lectures, and assorted presentations (live and on tape) on this subject from which I've picked up the information below. If you want hard numbers, they're out there ... but I decided to present this here for you "off the top of my head" rather than to bog things down with footnotes! If you really want to have me dig for data, shoot me an e-mail and we'll talk about sources, references, research and such. Again, this essay is to stress the reasons "as I see them" why these products are so important.
Imagine a football stadium ... some 60,000 or more people. Do you know how many of
them are going to die from heart disease? HALF! Think of that stadium and that
30,000 or so of those people will be killed by cardiovascular illness. PREVENTABLE
illness. Chilling, isn't it? Plus, there's no good way to tell if you are in
the half that will die from heart disease or the half that will die from cancers, accidents,
etc. In fact, in one-third of all cases, the FIRST SIGN of heart disease is a fatal
heart attack! So, not only are 30,000 of those people going to die from heart
disease, but 10,000 of them are likely to simply drop dead as their first clue that they
might be at risk! And, strangely enough, the odds are good that you've never heard
any of this before. Why?
Are you outraged? Are you saying to yourself, "somebody should be doing something
about this!". You should be. Study after study has shown that heart disease
is largely preventable with reductions of LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the
bloodstream (the incidence of heart attacks drops to nearly zero in a population with
cholesterol levels around 150). The American Journal of Cardiology notes that by
simply supplementing one's diet with soluble fiber, one can significantly lower cholesterol
levels. Additional studies have shown that increased fiber in the diet, even apart
from cholesterol reduction, is a substantial factor in preventing heart disease, as well
as other illnesses, including some cancers!
Who's to blame? Well, we all are to some extent, being complacent and unwilling to make
pro-active changes in our lives, waiting for the talking heads on the evening news to hand
down the latest tease from the drug companies, and even accepting the "fate" that heart
disease is waiting for us! However, let me introduce you to a more identifiable culprit ...
a nefarious thing called the S.A.D. The Standard American Diet!
The American Dietetic Association recommends that we consume from 20 to 35 grams of fiber
a day. Unfortunately, the Standard American Diet only provides 12 to 17 grams of dietary
fiber ... where are we going to get the rest? How can we make up a deficit of 8-18 grams
of fiber in our diet? It's amazing how poorly informed most people are when it comes
to this question! Some say "well, I eat a lot of salads" ... they had better
really eat a LOT of salad, since a whole head of lettuce has only about 5 grams of
fiber. Want to add 2-4 heads of lettuce to your daily diet? More fruits
and vegetables? Well, that depends ... 3 whole apples have 8 grams of fiber ... want
to add a half a dozen apples to your menu (along with about 500 additional calories)? ...
how about broccoli? ... it has about 4 grams per cup, care to add five cups? Whole
wheat bread is a good source of fiber, but you'd need 4-10 slices per day (and up to 1,000
calories) to get your fiber this way. You could also add a couple of cups of pinto
beans a day, but you might not be the most popular person to be around! Seriously,
though, the point being that while it is possible to get the recommended level of
fiber through one's diet, it is a fairly difficult thing for most Americans to manage.
Another issue is the sort of fiber one is getting. Most people think "fiber" and
think of the various laxative brands out there ... while these do contain fiber, it
is typically of the non-soluble variety. Non-soluble fiber, while being helpful for
transit times in the digestive tract, has very little effect on cholesterol levels, and
greatly increasing the amounts of non-soluble fiber in one's diet can actually be harmful
to one's health, making it harder to absorb nutrients from food! The key is to find sources
of SOLUBLE fiber ... as these are the fibers which have been shown to independently effect
cardiovascular and other health issues.
Well, where, you might ask, can I get this sort of fiber in my diet? The Unicity
Network's Rexall Showcase International division has a product called
BiosLife2
which a patented fiber and nutrient supplement that provides 4.5 grams of fiber per
packet (4 grams of soluble fiber and .5 gram of insoluble fiber) with its proprietary matrix
of pectin, guar gum, gum arabic, oat fiber, and locust bean gum. These soluble fibers
act to bind bile acids in the digestive tract, the bile acids are synthesized by the liver
from cholesterol and secreted into the small intestine ... as these acids are being carried
off by the fiber, the liver then draws off cholesterol from the blood stream to replace them,
thereby lowering the over-all cholesterol level in the system!
In addition to fiber, Unicity also offers the
Cellular Essentials
product pack, which was developed from the patents of Nobel Prize-winning researcher Linus
Pauling for "the reversal of heart disease without surgery" using complex of anti-oxidants
to break down the oxygenated bonds which hold the arterial plaque to the blood vessel walls,
and then a targeted nutritional combination to help heal the damaged areas of the arteries.
Products based on the most up-to-date scientific research are the hallmark of the Unicity
